Oats rava appe is a healthy South Indian snack made using oats, semolina (rava), and a few other simple ingredients. It is light, nutritious, and perfect for breakfast or as a tea-time snack. Here's a simple recipe to make oats rava appe:
Ingredients:
1 cup oats (quick or rolled)
1/2 cup rava (semolina)
1/2 cup curd (yogurt)
1/4 cup grated carrots
1/4 cup finely chopped onions
1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves
1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1-2 finely chopped green chilies (optional)
Salt to taste
Water as needed
Oil for greasing the appe pan
Instructions:
Prepare the Batter:
Dry roast the oats on low heat until they turn slightly golden. Allow them to cool, then grind them into a fine powder.
In a mixing bowl, combine the oats powder, rava, and curd. Mix well.
Add enough water to make a thick but pourable batter. Let it rest for 15-20 minutes.
Temper the Batter:
In a small pan, heat a little oil. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add finely chopped green chilies and sauté for a minute.
Add this tempering to the batter.
Add Vegetables and Spices:
To the batter, add grated carrots, chopped onions, coriander leaves, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.
Just before making the appes, add baking soda to the batter and mix gently.
Cook the Appe:
Heat the appe pan and grease each cavity with a little oil.
Pour a spoonful of batter into each cavity of the appe pan.
Cover and cook on low to medium heat until the bottom is golden brown.
Flip the appes and cook on the other side until they are fully cooked and crispy.
Serve:
Serve the oats rava appe hot with coconut chutney or any chutney of your choice.
Enjoy your delicious and healthy oats rava appe!
Tips
Consistency of the Batter:
The batter should be of thick, pourable consistency. If it's too thick, the appes might become dense; if it's too runny, they might not hold their shape well. Adjust the consistency by adding water little by little.
Resting Time:
Allow the batter to rest for at least 15-20 minutes. This helps the rava to absorb moisture and soften, resulting in fluffier appes.
Oats Powder: Make sure to roast the oats before grinding them into a fine powder. This enhances the flavor and makes the oats easier to grind.
Baking Soda: Add baking soda just before making the appes, as it helps in making them light and fluffy. If you don't have baking soda, you can use a pinch of Eno fruit salt.
Heat Control: Cook the appes on low to medium heat. This ensures that they cook evenly from the inside without burning the outside.
Greasing the Pan: Grease the appe pan cavities well with oil or ghee. This prevents the appes from sticking and helps them develop a nice crispy crust.
Vegetables: You can customize the appes by adding vegetables of your choice like finely chopped bell peppers, spinach, or grated zucchini. This not only adds flavor but also makes them more nutritious.
Serving: Serve the appes immediately after cooking while they are still hot and crispy. They tend to become soft if kept for too long.
Chutney: Pairing the appes with a spicy coconut chutney or tomato chutney enhances their taste.
Storing Batter:
If you have leftover batter, you can refrigerate it for a day. Just bring it to room temperature and adjust the consistency with a little water before making the next batch of appes.
These tips should help you make delicious, fluffy, and crispy oats rava appe every time!
