Ingredients:
1 cups- Whole wheat flour (atta)
¼ cup - all purpose flour
2 tbsp - curd
Water - as needed
½ tsp- Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
2 tbsp- Oil or ghee
2 tbsp- Butter (optional): For brushing the roti
¼ tsp - baking powder
2 pinch - baking soda
Instructions/ Recipe:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all purpose flour and salt.
Gradually add water to the flour while kneading it into a soft and smooth dough. The amount of water required may vary, so add it slowly until you achieve the right consistency.
Once the dough is formed, add 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee to it. Continue kneading for a few more minutes to incorporate the oil/ghee evenly into the dough. This step helps to make the roti softer.
Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest for about 15-20 minutes. Resting the dough improves its texture and makes it easier to roll out.
After resting, divide the dough into small equal-sized balls. Dust a rolling board and rolling pin with some flour.
Apply some water on the upper side.
Heat a tawa (flat griddle) or a non-stick pan on the stove over medium-high heat.
Once the tawa is hot, place the rolled roti with water side on it. Cook the roti until you see small bubbles forming on the surface. This should take about 1-2 minutes.
Flip the tawa on low flame 🔥 and roast the roti from the bubble side.
Now, remove the roti from the tawa and place it directly over a low to medium flame (gas stove) to give it a tandoor-like charred effect. You can use a pair of tongs to handle the roti safely.
Alternatively, you can use a preheated oven set to the highest temperature with the broiler on and cook the roti on a hot baking sheet for a minute or two.
Once the roti has a nice charred appearance, remove it from the flame or oven. Optionally, brush it with some butter for added flavor and softness.
Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls to make more tandoori rotis.
Tandoori rotis are best enjoyed hot and can be served with various Indian dishes like curries, lentils, or kebabs. They also go well with chutneys, pickles, and yogurt-based dips.
Enjoy your homemade tandoori rotis!
